After getting a bye in the first round of the Blackhawk Cup State Tournament, the Glenbard JV team would find itself matched up against ISHL-rival Plainfield in the 2nd round. Glenbard holds a 2-0 record this year against Plainfield, but both games were decided late, so Glenbard would need to be on top of their game to advance past them in the State Tournament.
The game got started with Plainfield getting on the board first just over 6 minutes into the game. Glenbard would answer quickly as Sophomore Nick Pietro found the back of the net. Glenbard grabbed the lead the 17 seconds later as Sophomore Nick Marcuccilli would give Glenbard a 2-1 advantage. Glenbard wasn't able to enjoy their lead long as Plainfield tied things up at 2-2 just over two minutes later. Glenbard regained their lead with 54 seconds left in first with a goal by Sophomore Matt Bosler, but once again Plainfield would fight back and tie the game 3-3 with 27 seconds left to the play in the opening frame.
The 2nd period would pick up right were the 1st left off as Glenbard would jump ahead 4-3 on a goal by Sophomore Chris Conklin just 31 seconds into the period. Plainfield would not go away though as they would tie the game 4-4 at the 9:00 mark. Glenbard would get their lead back on Bosler's 2nd goal of the game. Glenbard would then finally be able to grow their lead as Marcuccilli would score his 2nd goal of the game and Bosler would add his 3rd goal, on the powerplay, to give them a 7-4 lead heading into the 2nd period intermission.
After the break, Glenbard would pile on their lead and not look back. At 12:48 of the 3rd period, Sophomore Nick Fischer would score and then Freshman John Wilt would follow that up 24 seconds later to give Glenbard a 9-4 lead. Over a minute later, Glenbard would reach double-digits as Pietro would score his 2nd of the game. Sophomore Patrick Mullally would then notch 2 goals in an 8-second span to the lead to 12-4. Fischer would score his 2nd of the game and Marcuccilli would get his hat trick to round out the scoring in the 14-4 victory to advance JV into the quarterfinals. Sophomore goalie Sean Mitchell made 19 saves to get the win and Freshman Jacob Weisz would make 7 saves in shutout relief in the 3rd period. Glenbard JV will next take on Maine in the Blackhawk Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Edge in Bensenville.
