Varsity Defeat LWE To Advance To BHC Final Four
3/13/2012

The Glenbard Varsity team came into their BHC Quarterfinal matchup looking to eliminate LincolnWay East for the 2nd straight season.  Last year, Glenbard was able to knock off LWE in the 2nd round after Michael Pietro scored a PP goal in the 2nd OT after falling behind 2-0 early in the game.

This years game against LWE would start off just like last year's battle with Glenbard trailing early on.  Despite Glenbard carrying the play early on, LWE got on the board at the 8:02 mark of the first period.  LWE would tally again to go up 2-0 at 6:38 and Glenbard would be forced to call timeout to regroup after the tough start.  Glenbard would dominate the rest of the period, but were still unable to dent the net.  Despite outshooting LWE 8-4 in the first period, they would trail 2-0 going into the 2nd period.

Glenbard would continue to carry the play in the early moments of the 2nd period, and at the 11:55 mark, they would find themselves on the powerplay.  While on the powerplay, Senior defenseman Joe Bertane fired a shot from the point that got past the LWE goalie to get Glenbard on the board, now trailing 2-1.  After killing off a couple penalties of their own, Glenbard would find itself on the powerplay again and with 6:02 left in the 2nd period, Junior Nick Riscossa was able to tie the game up 2-2.  Glenbard outshot LWE 12-5 in the 2nd period, and 20-9 through 2 periods, but entered the 2nd intermission still in a tie game.

Coming out from the break, Glenbard continued to pour on the offensive attack and less than 2 minutes into the 3rd, Senior Lino DePinto drove to the net and gave Glenbard their first lead of the game.  DePinto's goal was assisted by Connor Heil and Brandon Kressner.  Contuining the momentum, just 35 seconds later, Riscossa got his 2nd of the game, assisted by Bertane to give Glenbard a 2-goal cushion at 4-2.  The Glenbard surge would keep coming when Senior Michael Pietro found himself in all alone on a breakaway and was able to slide the puck past the LWE goalie to give Glenbard a 5-2 lead.  Riscossa would notch his hat trick goal at 6:13 to give Glenbard a 6-2 lead and the goaltending of Senior Chris Matza would take it from there making 13 saves in the 3rd period to keep LWE in the distance.

The win would put Glenbard back in the Final Four for the first time in 3 years.  While Glenbard has won Cougar Cups and been to multiple Final Fours, this is the first team in club history to do it in the same year.  This sets up the matchup against top-seeded and 15-time State Champion Rockford.  The Semifinal game will be played Sunday, March 18th at the Edge in Bensenville.
