The Glenbard JV squad came into this weekend's home and home series with 1st place Lyons Township, looking to avenge a shootout loss earlier in the season. The series would get started on home ice Friday night.
The second matchup of the season would start off just like the first meeting did with a tight-checking, defensive game, with both goalies making it difficult on the opponent to find the back of the net. Freshman goalie Jim Bertane made 9 first period saves, but on the 10th shot, LT would jump out to a 1-0 lead just before the end of the period. The second period had the ice tilt in Glenbard's favor as they would outshoot LT 11-3 in the middle frame and with 31 seconds left, Junior Nick Marcuccilli would find the puck off a rebound right on the doorstep and put it in to tie the game up 1-1. The score remained tied in the 3rd period and it looked like the two teams were headed to a second straight shootout. That was until 23 seconds left when Freshman Connor Shin would fire a shot top-shelf over the LT goalies shoulder for Glenbard's first lead of the game. Glenbard would finish out the final seconds of the game keeping the puck out of their zone to clinch the 2-1 victory. Bertane made 17 saves as Glenbard outshot LT 33-18 and carry the momentum until Sunday's re-match at Darien.
Glenbard JV came into Sunday's game looking for a 4-point weekend and more importantly, within 1 point of 1st place Lyons Township. Once again, the teams would have trouble finding the net early on as the game went scoreless into the 2nd period. Glenbard started off the second period with a 5 on 3 powerplay, but we be unable to cash in before a penalty nullified the powerplay. Midway through the 2nd period, it was once again Nick Marcuccilli who would get Glenbard on the board first as he came in on a breakaway and deked the goaile to put Glenbard up 1-0. Connor Shin would continue his scoring touch as he found the top part of the net again on a great shot from the top of the circle to give Glenbard a 2-0 lead. Junior Connor Ruffolo would add onto that lead late in the 2nd period putting in his own rebound to give Glenbard a 3-0 edge heading into the final period. The three 2nd period goalies would chase the LT goalie from the net as LT tried to keep Glenbard off the scoreboard. The spark for LT in the goaltending change proved to work as they got an early 3rd period goal to make it a game. LT would then come to within 1-goal shortly after and we now had a 3-2 hockey game. Junior goalie Sean Mitchell made some key saves to keep Glenbard in front and then later in the 3rd period, Shin would give Glenbard their 2-goal cushion back with his 3rd goal in 2 games. That 4th goal proved to be huge, as LT kept pressing and with 8 seconds left, would cut the lead back to one at 4-3. But it was too little too late as LT couldn't get the puck back in the Glenbard zone and the buzzer sounded with Glenbard completing the weekend sweep of the 1st place LT team. Mitchell ended up making 31 saves, while unlike Friday night, LT would hold the shot advantage in this contest.
Glenbard JV moves its ISHL record to 9-2-2 and riding a 3-game winning streak. They next take on Homewood Flossmor next Friday at 6:50pm down in HF. Congrats to JV on the big weekend!!
