The Glenbard JV team headed into the playoffs not playing their best hockey of the season, but when it comes to playoff time, it doesn't take long to turn that back around. The JV squad entered the ISHL playoffs as a 3-seed, and would take on rival Lake Park in the opening round. While struggling against Lake Park all season, Glenbard came out fired up and advanced with an 8-3 victory. The win put the team in the semifinals against another rival team who they had trouble with at times this sesaon, in AWF.
Glenbard got off to a quick start as Junior Nick Marcuccilli put them on the board just over a minute into the game. Sophomore Jake Sadowski picked up the assist. The lead didn't last long as AWF was able to tie it up just over two minutes later. AWF would then take a 2-1 lead with four minutes left in the first. Glenbard would answer quicky just over a minute later as Marcuccilli would get his second goal of the game, this time assisted by Freshman Spencer Hitzel. The first period would end tied 2-2 with Glenbard holding the shot advantage 9-6. The second period didn't lead to much offense as Glenbard would only muster up five shots on net, but their defense would be the equalizer, only giving up two shots in the period. The tie game would hold up through the end of two periods. With a birth to the championship on the line, the game would remain tied until four minutes left in the third period when Marcuccilli would get his third goal of the game to complete the hat trick. Linemate Connor Ruffolo would assist on the eventual game-winning goal. Freshamn goalie, Jim Bertane, kept AWF off the board making six saves in the final period for a game total of 12 saves.
The win put Glenbard JV into the championship series against top-seed, Lyons Township starting next weekend. LT would get to the championship by beating South Elgin and Fenwick #2 in their playoff games. In 3 previous matchups against LT, Glenbard has two wins and a shootout loss. With all three games being decided by one goal, this series should be a great one to watch. Game #1 will be Saturday, March 2nd, 5:40pm @Darien and Game #2 will be Monday, March 4th, 7:50pm, hosted by Glenbard at Center Ice.
Come cheer on the Glenbard JV team during their pursuit of a league championship and good luck to the players and coaches. It should be some exciting hockey to watch.
