Ruffolo's OT Winner Gives JV 1-0 Series Lead
3/2/2013

When the Glenbard JV squad entered the JV championship series, they knew they would have a close battle on their hands.  Having played Lyons Township three times earlier in the season, all three of those games were decided by one goal, including one that required a shootout.  This game would fall right in line with the previous meetings.

The first period had both teams feeling the nerves of a championship game, as both teams struggled to put passes together and get much offense going.  Glenbard was only able to muster up four shots on net, and LT only three shots.  Both goaltenders proved to be up to the task, as they would stop all shots they faced.

Glenbard would find themselves shorthanded early in the second period and LT would make them pay for it as they were able to get on the board first at the 12:35 mark.  Glenbard would keep putting pucks on the LT net, but could not find the back of it.  Junior Nick Marcuccilli would find some open ice on a breakaway but his high glove side shot would be stopped by the LT netminder.  With 5:55 left in the second, Marcuccilli would find himself all alone again as he blocked a defenseman's shot, this time going five-hole and the puck just snuck through to tie the game up 1-1.  Glenbard would outshoot LT in the period, but only by an 9-7 margin.  Sophomore goalie Jacob Weisz was in a groove as he would stop every shot he faced in the period.

The third period would provide great drama as both teams had great chances to give their squad the lead, but once again, the goalies stood tall and kept each shot they faced out of their net.  Glenbard would find itself on the man advantage twice during the final period, but couldn't get much going on the tough LT penalty kill unit.  LT would outshoot Glenbard 8-6 in the period, but regulation would not be enough as these teams were headed to overtime.

Not much extra time would be needed as only a minute and twenty-one seconds into OT, Glenbard's Marcuccilli would streak in on the right side and fire a hard low shot that LT's goalie was able to get a pad on, but kicked the rebound straight out into the slot.  Junior Connor Ruffolo was able to find himself in the slot to get that rebound and fire it past the LT goalie to give Glenbard the 2-1 victory.  Weisz made big saves all night by turning away 19 out of 20 shots he faced to keep his team in a position to win.

Glenbard will try to wrap up the championship series on home ice in Game #2.  The game will be played Monday night at Center Ice of Dupage with puck drop at 7:50pm.
