Brinley and Mitchell Leads JV to Championship Sweep
3/4/2013

The Glenbard JV team entered Monday's Game 2 holding a 1-0 lead in the best of 3 series over Lyons Township.  Excellent goaltending by Jacob Weisz and an overtime rebound shot by Connor Ruffulo proved to be the difference.  Glenbard would look for timely goals and another outstanding goaltending performance if they wanted to win the championship on their home ice.

The timely goals would come very early for Glenbard....and I mean VERY EARLY.  After winning the opening faceoff and getting the puck deep in the LT zone, Connor Ruffolo would find the puck on his stick behind the goal line and find a wide open Chris Brinley in the slot, who would bury the one-timer to give Glenbard a 1-0 lead just eleven seconds into the game.  Glenbard would continue the pressure after the next faceoff and once again, Ruffolo to Brinley would strike again thirty-two seconds later to go up 2-0 forty-three seconds into the game.  LT would wake up after the second goal, but were unable to get one on the board and the first period would end with the 2-0 score.  Shots on goal for the period would end tied 8-8.

The second piece of the winning formula would come through in the 2nd period.  LT outshot Glenbard in the middle frame by a 13-1 margin, but goalie Sean Mitchell turned away all 13 shots.  Glenbard headed into the intermission break hanging onto their 2-0 lead, but knew that LT would put on a good fight in the 3rd with their backs against the wall.

Heading into the final period, Glenbard knew they would have to battle hard if they were to keep their lead and wrap up the series.  With 10:01 left in the game, Brinley would find a streaking Nick Marcuccilli and with a quick move, would slip the puck past the LT goalie and give Glenbard a huge 3-goal cushion.  The rest was up to Mitchell as he would face seven shots in the 3rd, including an LT powerplay, and would not be beaten.  Mitchell would wind up making 28 saves in the game and turned away some excellent LT chances late.

As the final buzzer went off at Center Ice, Glenbard would become JV Champions in the Suburban Division of the IHSHL by sweeping the top-seeded Lyons Township squad.  Not needing a 3rd game, would now allow Glenbard to focus on the State Tournament, which begins on Saturday against Naperville Central.

Congratulations to the Glenbard JV players and coaches on their outstanding achievement and good luck in State!
