Illinois West Hockey League
Illinois West Hockey—formally part of the Illinois West High School Hockey League (IHSHL-West)—is a competitive high school hockey league made up primarily of teams from the western suburbs of Chicago. It is one of several divisions under the broader Illinois high school hockey structure governed by the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois.
League Type
Illinois West is a scholastic (school-based) hockey league, meaning players represent their high schools rather than club programs. However, because not every school can field a full team, many teams are “combined” clubs that pull players from multiple nearby schools (for example, teams like DuPage Stars or Wheaton West).
Structure
Illinois West typically includes:
- ~15 Varsity teams
- ~13 Junior Varsity (JV) teams
Teams compete at both levels during the season, giving opportunities for players of different skill levels to participate.Varsity is the top level, while JV allows for development and depth.
The season generally runs from late summer/early fall through March, with:
- Around 25+ regular season games
- Additional playoff games and league tournaments
Games are played mostly on weekends and evenings, and teams often practice multiple times per week.
